GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCED SOIL-INTEGRATED BRIDGE STRUCTURE (GRS-IBS)

GRS-IBS is the acronym for Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge Structure pioneered by the MSE wall market and frequently used by the Federal Highway Administration along with many other public departments of transportation. GRS-IBS structures are similar to MSE wing walls used around bridge structures except they are designed as integral abutments accommodating the full axial load of the bridge superstructure. These structures are often designed with a reinforced soil foundation (RSF), Truncated primary reinforcement lengths, a reinforced soil bearing pad for the bridge girders, and an integrated soil reinforced approach. GRS-IBS structures provide significant cost savings when compared to typical bridge abutment construction especially in low load applications such as pedestrian bridges or short single span bridges.
