SEGMENTAL RETAINING WALLS

WHAT ARE SEGMENTAL RETAINING WALLS?

Segmental Retaining Walls (SRW) are modular retaining walls that either holds or retains soil behind it. They are used for vertical grade changes and create more usable space.

SRW walls can be designed as either gravity or as reinforced walls.  Gravity walls use their own weight to retain the soil and are typically used for smaller retaining wall applications.  Reinforced walls need additional materials to assist with the earth retention to provide more strength to the structure. In SRW walls, geogrid is typically used for additional reinforcement in these applications but other options such as soil anchors, no-fines concrete, etc. may also be used.

BENEFITS

Some of the benefits of segmental retaining wall designs are:

  • Design flexibility
  • Aesthetically pleasing with a variety of facing styles to fit the style desired.
  • Economical solution
  • Ease of installation
  • Versatile – can be use for a wide variety of grade changes in straight, curved and serpentine walls.
  • In most cases – no concrete footing is needed
  • High performance and durability in slowing soil erosion
  • Reduces damage and maintenance of structures and landscaping

Before considering the use of segmental retaining walls in your design, some things to consider are:

  • Can be labor intensive – depending on the project
